If you play basketball, whether it’s by playing on the city league, on a high school team, or even just out in the front yard, you need to keep your smile in mind. This is important because your teeth and gums can be in danger while you play if you’re not careful. To help you care for your smile while you run, jump, and shoot, our dentists, Dr. Sellers, Dr. Platt, Dr. Lochtefeld, and Dr. Lochtefeld, have some tips for you.
First, wear a mouthguard. A mouthguard can protect your smile while you’re practicing and playing. You might not think this is necessary, but it is. Because basketball is so high in contact, there is a good chance you can suffer a blow to the face, which could result in oral injury. So, if you want to avoid knocked-out, chipped, and broken teeth as well as injured gums, then wear a mouthguard.
Second, drink water instead of sports drinks. This is recommended because sports drinks are loaded with sugar, and sugar promotes cavity development. You don’t want a cavity, do you? So, stick to drinking water instead. If this isn’t possible, make sure to rinse your mouth with water immediately after drinking the sports drink.
